Seven Considerations for BabyWearing

Because of its relative newness in the West, some people are often uncomfortable with the idea of babywearing or using a baby wrap or sling to carry their infants and small children. However, baby slings have been around for centuries, and are present in many different cultures throughout the world. If you are considering a baby sling, there are some very simple rules and guidelines that you will want consider and follow.

1. It’s better to purchase a soft fabric, that is also somewhat stretchy. Carriers that offer bulky padding often create discomfort after 30 minutes of use. It’s counterintuitive, but many people make the same observation. Additionally, slings that utilize soft, stretchy fabric are better suited for handling your child as she grows.

2. Be sure that the carrier supports your physical needs as well. For example, if you suffer from back pain, it’s better to select a carrier that comes over both shoulders as opposed to just one.

3. For newborns or preemies, try supporting their heads with a small receiving blanket. You should also attempt to support their torsos as well with the blanket. You’ll only need it for a couple of weeks, and your child will be able to better support themselves in the sling.

4. While nursing your child, try to position them in the cradle position. This will allow for better discretion during feedings. For additional privacy, I suggest that you also purchase a nursing cover with your sling.

5. As your child grows, you can also use the tummy to tummy position or heart to heart position. This position adds for additional closeness for you and your baby. It also gives your child a better look of your facial expressions. This is a great way to teach your baby facial expressions and how to read body languages.

6. You can also try the “kangaroo position” with your child. This gives your child a great view of the world around them., It’s another great feature of baby wearing that aids in the emotional and cognitive development of your child.

7. For babies 7 months and older, you can also try the hip position. This position allows for easier carrying as your child grows and becomes heavier. It also allows the child to be slightly more active while in the sling.

7 Surprising Benefits of Using a Baby Sling

There are many practical reasons why parents are switching to baby carries, slings, wraps, and pouches. Among them, parents enjoy the hands-free benefits, the freedom from back and shoulder pain, and the additional comfort that it brings to their children. In addition to these "obvious" benefits, there are other additional benefits that researchers are currently working to confirm. Here are 7 widely held beliefs concerning the benefits of baby slings.

1. It reduces postpartum depression among mothers. For anyone that has ever used one of these carriers, there is an unexpected joy shared between both parent and child that often overcome the unexplainable helplessness that new parents often feel. Additional, the hands-free benefit of the carrier prevents new parents from feeling overwhelmed.

2. Improves infant growth and development through vestibular stimulation, increased parent interaction, and decreased time spent crying.

3. Increases the likelihood, frequency, and comfort of breastfeeding. Through the use of baby slings, many mothers are able to nurse their children hands-free (this takes lots of practice for both mommy and baby).

4. Increases the parents' feelings of competence and satisfaction. The constant closeness with their children allows for the parent to be more accessible to their child's needs. Additionally, the closeness soothes the child, which means less crying, and less crying positively impacts the parents' perception of their own parenting skills.

5. Improves the parents' physical disposition. Less arm pain from carrying their children.

6. Improves the breathing (oxygenation) of newborns when they are positioned correctly in the sling or wrap.

7. In at risk populations, it reduces the chances of abuse. In other words, parents are able to keep better track of their children when in public places.

8 Benefits of Using a Baby Sling or Baby Carrier

1. Freedom to use your hands. Often parents are able to use one-hand while holding their newborn. As the child grows (and gets heavier) keeping one arm becomes increasingly difficult and dangerous. The use of a sling allows for both hands to remain free. Many slings can support a child up to 30 pounds.

2. Eases back and shoulder pain. Of course, this assumes that you wear the sling properly. But using a baby carrier is better for your back and shoulders.

3. Allows view for child. Children love being able to look around. For my son, he seems to be especially interested when we are in crowded areas. Baby slings offer a low-stress, comfortable way for your child to be able to view the world.

4. Allows for hands-free breastfeeding. This may take some practice for both Mom and baby. But there are many that have mastered this. In addition to purchasing a baby sling, many mothers also choose to purchase a nursing cover to go with their slings.

5. Allows for dealing with multiple children simultaneously. How many times have a seen a parent trying to hold their newborn while dealing with an excited toddler? I’ve seen it numerous times. Parents of multiple children gravitate towards the use of slings and carriers for this very reason.

6. Reduces “fussiness” from lack of arm time. Children love to be carried, and they love being near their parents. The practice of using a baby slings makes this very easy and convenient. Parents love using slings in order to soothe their young children.

7. Reduces arm pain. From personal experience, I know the pain and fatigue that comes with carrying a child. Baby slings are the perfect solution for this.

8. Less awkward transportation. Sometimes, I hate using a baby stroller. But I use it in order to avoid the arm and back pain that may come from carrying my child. A baby carrier is the perfect balance between ease of use and comfort.

Seven Things to Check for when using Baby Slings

1. Baby slings, wraps, and Mei Tai’s create a 5-point harness effect. Ring slings and pouches also create a secure area for the child to rest in the carrier. However, parents still worry about the child falling out. If worn properly, these types of baby carriers are very secure and safe.

2. Danger of bumping into objects with the infant. This concern is actually present when carrying your child in your arms. So, you should always be care. If you’re using a carrier, both of your hands are free, so you’re in a better position to protect your child in case of an accident.

3. Risk of burning the baby while drinking hot beverages. This same danger exists when arm carrying the child as well. Using a baby sling is not a license to be less cautious with your child.

4. Danger of injuring the child’s spine or hips. Proper wear of a baby sling does not create the opportunity for these types of injuries. If a parent has concerns about using the sling properly, there are many instructional videos on how to use and there are also many carriers that are more intuitive than the traditional wraps.

5. Back pain and fatigue. Actually, baby slings are often more comfortable than arm-carrying. This is one of the many benefits of using a baby sling or carrier.

6. Risk of suffocation. While front-carrying or hip-carrying, the child is very visible, and the sling will provide a cradle that is similar to your arms. The sling has to be abused in order to create this type of situation.

7. Wear and tear. As with anything that you use, you should regularly inspect your carrier for tears and rips.

Halle Knocks Down Pregnancy Rumors

So I am aware I jumped on the Halle is pregnant bandwagon and everyone was watching. Kinda goes back to my post on Penelope Cruz and whether she should answer to everyone about what is going on in her belly.

Check out Halle Berry's response on the Jay Leno show about her mama status.

I love the way children are so observant and they create their own image of what mommy's do. For example, Jennifer Garner's daughter Violet thinks her mom's job is to bow to people.

According to People, Jennifer told reporters in Toronto, "If you ask her what I do, she'll say she remembers me bowing on stage when I did a show in New York, and so she'll say, 'My mom sometimes will bow on stage and sometimes she gets her hair and makeup done,' " says Garner. "It's a great job!"

I love the innocence in children and I am a big fan of Jennifer too!

So Not Fair

Just one week after having her son Sparrow, Nicole Richie took daughter Harlow out for some mommy time. And let me just say, she looks fabulous.

According to US Magazine, "Nicole was in a really good mood," says the X17 photographer who spotted her. "She looked absolutely amazing -- anyone who didn't know would never have guessed she had given birth just a week ago. She even looked well-rested!"

Just a great recovery from having a baby. But I guess you can't stay indoors forever.

Big Congrats to Jenna Elfman

Jenna Elfman is not only a pregnant woman on her new show "Accidentally on Purpose," she will be pregnant in real life. And talk about time management, she and her husband thought it would only make sense to try for another baby after finding out she would be on her new show. She was funny on "Darma and Greg," so I definitely plan on watching her new show. Have you ever made a decision to have a baby based on other things going on in your life? Let me know.

New Zealand Understands Baby Slings

I found this neat little article from the Auckland Stuff website that further supports my post on how baby slings helps with colic. Check out the article and note the differing slings and children sizes that they carry. And remember, you can find these and similar slings on our site. Have a great day.

Celebrity Sling ID: Taye Diggs

We already showed you Taye Diggs' bundle of joy, so now it's time to show you our baby sling pick for him, if we had our way.

When I think of Taye Diggs, I always remember his days in the play, Rent (the stage play and the movie). Since Rent took place in New York, I think of dark colors and urban elements (stay with me here). When I think of dark colors, I think of black. So naturally, we have selected a basic Black Ring Carrier from Pink Lemonade, $86 for Mr. Diggs. This baby carrier grows with your child from newborn to 36 pounds. It evenly distributes weight of baby across back and easily adjusts for multiple carrying positions. This is the perfect sling for a dad on the move.

You can find this carrier and our other selections on our site Pure Baby Slings.com

Video Delight: How to Wear Your Baby

We found a simple YouTube video showing how to wear a baby carrier. This video works perfectly for the carriers we have like TogetherBe and Wrap n' Wear. Check them out here.

Style Trend: Amethyst

Amethyst is my all-time favorite color. Actually anything in the purple family is just fine and I am so glad that it is fall fashion trend. Fashion has allowed it to stick around for at least two seasons now, but I've always wanted to wear this color from head to toe. But I think this idea would have me looking like a succulent grape. So, I guess the best rule of thumb for anything purple is wear at least one bold piece that stands out. So as a new mom, why not inject this trend into your baby carrier?

We've found the perfect baby sling that keeps up with this trend. Wings of a Butterfly by Rockin' Baby Sling is great burst of purple for your wardrobe. It has a bold purple print that reverses to a purple. And for your earthy types, it is 100% organic cotton. This sling is guaranteed to turn heads.

Love it? Need to have it? Well you can find it here. Enjoy.

Salma Hayek and Valentina's Mommy Time

I love toddlers. All smiles with no worries. Check out Salma Hayek's precious girl in blue. Love the color coordination!

Celebrity Sling ID: Gwen Stefani

I absolutely love Gwen Stefani's ability to multi-task her career (the many that she has) and her mommy-dom. It is so awesome! She recently showed her Spring 2010 line of L.A.M.B. last week and CBS was sending her plenty of love as she sat in the stands at the U.S. Open. I know it takes an entire village to give her the time for R&R, but I still think she manages her time so well. So this post is dedicated to the moms who want to do it all while taking care of baby. And a baby sling and wrap is the perfect choice.

Gwen has always been a fan of baby slings, so this Celebrity Sling ID is very easy. The Rockin Baby Sling is a wonderful sling and Gwen is a big fan. I am sure she has many, but the one I would suggest is If Everyone Cared Organic Baby Sling. The torquoise print is vibrant enough to show off Gwen's personality and it's certified 100% cotton. The aluminum sling adjusts and there is plenty of fabric on the tail to adjust with the babies weight. And let's not forget the pocket on the tail for small knick-knack items.

We've just added the Rockin' Baby Store as a vendor to our store, so if you are interested in purchasing this sling and many others, come see what we have here.

So You're Not Pregnant?

This has got to be the worst. Especially for women who have already had a child and can't get rid of the pregnancy pooch.

People have been speculating that Penelope Cruz is with child already, but she has already denied that she is pregnant. At the Toronto International Film Festival, Cruz admitted that she is tired of the question about what is in her belly. And when asked about her status by USA Today she said, "I start getting some presents from friends saying, 'Congratulations, you're pregnant.' And I say, 'No, I'm not, so return the presents,'" she told the newspaper. "It's amazing."

I would love for someone to ask me this question (BTW, I am not). I just need an excuse to go off on someone. I know there are times, I look at ice cream and I get a pooch.

New Vendor Alert: Clean Shopper

We are so happy to add a new vendor to our site. Clean Shopper produces some of the most adorable shopping cart and high chair covers. So cute, I wish I came up with the idea myself. As a mom with a 2 year old, I know the perils of going shopping and his sticky little hands are touching the same cart that over thousands of people has touched. Well Clean Shopper is helping ease your sense of security by providing a covers that are both fashionable and easy to use. All of their products meet stringent CPSIA standards for quality and safety and they are super affordable. Shopping cart covers are only $30 and high chair covers are $32.

You can find these are other great accessories at our site.

Happy hunting!

Are You Surprised?

Tom Brady just confirmed his wife Giselle Bundchen is pregnant with their first child together. No real surprise for the many who have been tracking her pregnancy. The real surprise would be if their child was born already a supermodel athlete that's 5'5" at birth. Do you think they should have confirmed the pregnancy earlier or that is their private moment to have kept to themselves? Congrats to both and here is the ESPN video that confirmed the news.

Baby Slings and Provided Security

Like most people out there, seeing the raw emotions that have stemmed from the healthcare debate caught me off guard. It has been an event that has caused me to pause and to really learn how to hear people, their fears, their hopes, and their values. Strangely enough, your hear parents share a similar mix of feelings and emotions when it comes to the aids they use concerning their newborn children. Doubt me? Let me explain.

1. Security and Freedom. Children love the security that comes along with being close to their parents. The sound of their heartbeat, the warmth of being close, and the proximity of their parents’ voice has a calming affect on newborns. But how can a parent provide this comfort and still take care of daily activities? A baby sling provides a solution that allows a parent to provide their child non-stop comfort, while the parent to move with their hands-free.

2. Choices. We all want to have a wide-range of choices to select from. No one should feel boxed-in or trapped when it comes to selection. At http://www.purebabyslings.com/, the internet’s largest selection of baby slings is available. There’s a wide-range of colors, patterns, and prints. Additionally, you can select slings of various fabrics, including cotton and silk. There’s even a special selection of baby carries designed specifically for fathers.

3. Add-ons. Every basic plan needs to have the ability to be amended and tailored to each specific person. At www.purebabyslings.com, there’s a wide-range of accessories available for purchase as well. These include diaper bags and caddies, nursing covers, paci clips, and much more! Purebabyslings.com is your one-stop shopping experience for any new mother.

4. It’s fun! Okay, you may not see a parallel here with healthcare, but using one of your baby slings, wraps, or pouches is really quite enjoyable. You feel the great relief, as the carrier provides back support and allows it easier for you to move about from day to day. Additionally, with our wide selection, you’ll be sure to find a sling that is the perfect look for you.

Style Trend: Leopard Prints

We are launching a new profile section on Pure Baby Slings Blog. We are looking at the latest trends in fashion and how they match the wonderful baby slings and infant carriers we carry on the Pure Baby Slings site.

With New York Fashion Week showing the fabulous collections for Spring 2010, the fashion trends for the fall have already been written. This week we will be looking at leopard print.
The key with leopard prints is you can't go overboard with it. You have to pace yourself and add just a few pieces. According to ShoppingtheTrend.com,
As for your own wardrobe, a little splash is all you really need. A pair of leopard shoes, animal print ankle boots, fabulous handbag, or even a
leopard belt will update your classics. You may want to keep this to a
minimum during office hours, but if you like exploring your wild side, check
out the leopard tops & jackets below which can be easily paired with
distressed skinny jeans.
If you want to take the plunge and wear just a little bit, you can opt to get one of our fine slings. Here is our best interpretation of this Fall trend.

Celebrity Sling ID: Nicole Richie

So cool! Those are the only words to describe the amount of celeb babies being born recently. And of course yours too! Nicole Richie gave birth to a baby boy today. They wrote on their website:

"In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009, Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden. He weighs 7 lbs. 14 oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes."
In this edition of Celebrity Sling ID, I think it will be fairly easy to assign Nicole Richie a sling because she exudes a bohemian vibe and she appears to be a very big fan of baby slings. She seems like she is inspired by all things earthy and natural, so I have chosen the Baby K'tan Natural Organic Carrier, $66.

This baby carrier allows you to carry baby in 8 positions, has a back support band, and it's made of 100% natural cotton. It has been featured on The Today Show, Redbook Magazine, Urban Baby, iVillage, Parent & Family, Pregnancy & Newborn. Great for the mom on the go, which I know Nicole would appreciate with her many ventures and projects. You can find this carrier here.

Once again, congrats to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden!

Heidi Klum Works It In Heels

I've got to hand it to Heidi Klum. Pregnant or not, she is going to be fashionable and she is going to do it in heels. I remember when I was pregnant, all I wanted to do was walk around barefooted.

Heidi and Seal have a date night at the "Get Schooled" Conference and Premiere in Los Angeles. Loves her tie-dye inspired tunic and we think she looks faboulous.

So tell me. Could you wear heels while pregnant? Check out the other flix below.

Medical News Today Cures for Colic

I just wanted to share Medical News Today's insight into what can be a mystery: colic. I thought this was a very good comprehensive article on colic and I hope you enjoy it. Often, the uncontrollable crying can be a new mom's worse nightmare. But according to the Medical News Today one way to help a colicky baby is continual motion. Here's their complete list of suggestions and note they point out that wearing a baby sling helps:

1.Swaddling a baby during a crying episode may help (wrapping him/her up firmly in a blanket).
2. Sit the baby upright when feeding; this makes it less likely that air is swallowed.
3. Sometimes more frequent - but smaller - feedings may help.
4. Breastfeeding mothers may find that if they avoid tea, coffee, spicy foods and alcohol the baby's colic symptoms become less severe.
5. A pacifier (dummy) - some parents have found that offering the baby a pacifier helps.
6. Make sure the holes in the bottle teats are the right size. If they are too small the baby is likely to swallow more air during each feed.
7. Make sure you have burped your baby after a feed. Sit the baby upright or hold him/her against your shoulder with the neck and head supported. Rub their back and tummy until you air comes out. Sometimes the baby may bring up a bit of milk; this is normal.
8. Sometimes picking the baby up and putting him/her down frequently may make the crying worse. Comforting the baby in a quiet place with dimmed lighting often works better. When you are sure the baby is OK - fed, clean, not too hot or cold, leave him/her in the cot for a while.
9. Some people find that going for a walk with the stroller helps settle the baby down, as might a drive in the car. Or anything that keeps the baby in motion - perhaps a baby sling will make it less tiring on the arms.
10. Sometimes a background noise, such as that made by a washing machine, or vacuum cleaner helps settle babies down.
11. A warm bath, or gentle massage may also help.
12. Get someone to help - having someone else help out gives you some private time. This may help calm you and your anxieties, which may result in more peace all round.

Celebrity Sling ID: Roger Federer

With Roger Federer being on pace to win another Grand Slam in the U.S. Open. Can you believe the gifts this man has been given? And we are not just talking tennis. Father to twin two-month old girls, Federer told People Magazine,

"It's an amazing feeling to be called a dad. I take a lot of pride in that title."
And when it comes to changing diapers, he says,

"Thank God nobody is judging me on it. It's hard! But I'm still trying to be good at it."
So, no entry would be complete without a celebrity sling ID for Federer. I am suggesting the Carrier Espresso Baby Wrap, $49.99 by Wrap n' Wear. I think this would be the perfect sling for Dads especially an athletic dad like Federer. I think it is more of a structured baby wrap that helps keep baby tucked and secure. And of course, you can find this wrap here.

Milla Jovovich Outing With Family

Recently married Milla Jovovich, has been known to sport her baby wrap from time to time. This time, she opted for the stroller option. Here she is with husband Paul W.S. Anderson and daughter Ever Gabo in Toronto, Canada. BTW, she is looking so fabulous. I remember her being open about losing the baby weight. Two years later and I am still trying to lose mine! Check out her flix below.

Adam Sandler and Daughter Enjoy Malibu

There is something about Dads and their daughters. Dads are the first men in daughters' lives and it's so cool to see Adam Sandler enjoy some bonding time with his daughter Sunny Madeline. She looks so adorable in her sunny yellow outfit.
BTW, we will be offering similar selections soon. But in the mean time, here are some more flix of Adam and his girl.

Celebrity Sling ID: Marley Shelton

Actress Marley Shelton welcomed a baby girl yesterday and she came in at a whopping 9 lbs and 21 inches. Quite a big girl! According to People, her rep said,

"She's an absolutely miraculous, gorgeous bundle of pure love," Flynn said in a statement. Mother, father and baby are "doing great."

Some mommas may be concerned that the baby slings that we offer do not grow with their children. Well we are here to tell you that many of the slings we carry are able to carry up to 35 lbs. That is a large toddler! A toddler that is able to chew steak, no less!

So what is my Celebrity Sling ID for Marley Shelton? We think she would look great with the Lighly Padded Periwinkle Sling by Maya Wrap, $65.95. This is a great ring sling that adjusts with your baby's growth. It also includes a pocket that will be handy for keys, pacifiers, toys, or even lipstick (if you choose). The cool thing about this wrap, it also includes an instructional DVD.

You can find this wrap and other brands at PureBabySlings.com.

Enjoy!

Celebrity Sling ID: Lisa Loeb

I think it is so cool that Lisa Loeb is pregnant. She seems so down to earth and I was a huge fan of her show #1 Single because she was very relaxed and seemed like someone I would enjoy meeting for coffee. Her style is quirky (with her retro glasses) and it fits her personality. So, let's play Celebrity Sling ID and try to pair her with the perfect infant sling for her new baby.

Since she has a retro/Hello Kitty vibe going with her style, I think the Mocca Ring Carrier ($86-$96) is the perfect carrier for her. It has a funky floral print dominated with orange and brown colors. She would rock this baby sling as she went to pick up her donuts and coffee from her neighborhood coffee shop.
You can find this sling at our shop, PureBabySlings.com. Have a good day!

Celebrity Sling ID: Halle Berry

We are so pleased to see that Halle Berry is expecting another baby. I truly feel her intentions to expand her family is from the heart and I know she is/will be a great mom. Many have speculated her being pregnant and a close "source" has confirmed with Life and Style magazine that she is indeed expecting.

"Halle is overjoyed. She's just ecstatic to be pregnant again. She wasn't sure if she'd have another baby, so she's very happy."
So now, it's time to play Celebrity Sling ID! I picture Halle Berry to be a California girl who likes casual and lightweight fabrics. She tends to wear neutral colors and prints, so I think the French Twill Stone Sling ($57) is the perfect baby sling for her. She can wear this with her usual baggy jeans, t-shirt and flip flops.

If you like this sling and you are interested in purchasing this, you can go to PureBabySlings.com. You can also find a wide variety of baby slings and wraps here.

Congrats!

Celebrity Sling ID: Nicole Sullivan

Congratulations are in order to Nicole Sullivan who was best known for being on MadTV and the King of Queens. I think she is one funny lady and I love the way she works her facial expressions with her comic acting. So the question is which PureBabySling fits her personality.

I would say the The Dotted Daisy Orange Adjustable Sling would be the perfect Sling ID for Nicole. It is a bright patterned fabric sling that would show off her whimsical personality. Such a fun pattern! This infant sling keeps the baby snug while allowing a busy mom like Nicole easy access to her BlackBerry. Besides, Nicole has to keep working on her next comedy routine. Perhaps it would be about the joys of motherhood.

You can find the Dotted Daisy Orange Adjustable Sling at PureBabySlings.com for $140.

Congrats!
